Objective

Unintentional injury is the third leading cause of death. We examine the rate of fatal and nonfatal injuries in nonmetropolitan and metropolitan areas, with a focus on the effects of race/ethnicity. Nonmetropolitan residents are more likely than metropolitan residents to suffer a fatal unintentional injury, though we found no difference in the rates of nonfatal unintentional injury emergency department visits.
