Objective

Periodic examination of rural vs. urban variations in substance use (the misuse of alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription therapeutic drugs) is warranted to effectively allocate prevention and treatment resources across geographic areas. This report provides contemporary prevalence rates for alcohol use, illicit drug use, and prescription psychotherapeutic drug misuse among metropolitan and non-metropolitan residents nationally.
